Roots & Wings

In July 2023, we took the opportunity to use vacant shop premises at 3-5 New Shambles hosting the ‘Upsurge’ art exhibition as part of the first Kendal Pride weekend. Since then we have continued to use the space for various events—book sales, CD sales, a pop-up Fairtrade shop during Kendal Mountain Festival and Christmas Craft Fairs. We have got together to talk about books, and on the last Friday in the month our informal Discussion Group meets there. It is a beautiful space and we have many exhibitions booked in by local artists.

Our minister, Mandy, loves weaving and everything textile related. You can find her in No 5 during opening times—10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday. Visitors are always welcome whether they want to see the art on display next door—the two shops are linked—talk about weaving, the ethos of the chapel and Unitarian beliefs, or anything else. Many a curious passerby has asked, ‘What is this shop?’ but as it says on the notice in the window it is more a space for creativity and connection. And whilst our Schoolroom is out of action it is Kendal Unitarians being out in the community. All are welcome. We would love to meet you.
